Pack Hike - Hanging Rock State Park

Join Pack 97 for a 4.7 mile hike of Moore’s Wall Loop Trail for spectacular views of the Blue Ridge, Hanging Rock, and Pilot Mountain. Climb to the top of a fire tower for a 360  degree view. When done, swim in the lake, relax on a sandy beach, or climb in the rock garden. Camping requires reservations. Small fee for swimming. Directions: The park is one hour forty-five minutes from St. Mark. Follow I-77 North and take exit 51A for I-40 East. Then exit to the left at Exit 188 merging onto I-40 BUS East to Winston-Salem. Take Exit 6B for US-52 North. Take Exit 114 for Germanton Rd. At the bottom of exit, turn left onto NC 8 North. Follow NC 8 North through Germanton. Drive through Germanton. Just outside town, turn left at the BP gas station towards Danbury. Turn left at intersection with NC 89 (there is a Dollar General at intersection). Drive through Danbury. At the Pioneer Community Hospital turn left following the sign to the park. Park at upper bathhouse/lake parking lot. Meet at the large brand new picnic shelter.

Pack 97 Hiking Program

The hiking program runs year round and consists of monthly hikes at interesting locations around the Charlotte area.

Most hikes are within an hour's drive although sometimes we venture farther afield and are about 2 to 4 miles long. They are appropriate for all ranks from Tiger to Webelos. All scouts, families and siblings of Pack 97 are welcome to participate.

Pack 97 Intro to Backpacking
The intro to backpacking program will run year around in coordination with the hiking program. The backpacking program will serve to prepare older Cub Scouts for high adventure programs traditionally found in Boy Scouts. It will allow experienced hikers to become familiar with backpacking and offers educational components focused on backpacking safety, equipment, trail and food preparation and leave no trace principles.
  • The program is restricted to Bear and Webelos scouts who have earned their 20 miler hiking award.
  • The backpacking program follows the same schedule as Pack 97's Pack 97's 2014-2015 Hiking Schedule. Check the pack website in early spring for announcements on the backpack campout.

Pack 97 actively participates in the SCOUTStrong PALA (Presidential Active Lifestyle Award) Challenge. This challenge is designed to motivate participants to be physically active on a regular basis by allowing them to participate in activities they enjoy, as well as improving their eating habits. Earning a PALA is definitely doable by anyone at any fitness level.
